Enterprise Tree Planting ESG Outcome - Synopsys, From Leadership Training to Planting Sustainable Commitment

Synopsys, Inc., headquartered in California, is the world's number one EDA Electronic Design Automation manufacturer; as an innovative company that develops electronic products and software applications, Synopsys is committed to alleviating global warming, maintaining pre-industrialization temperatures within 1.5°C. Also, the company has set a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2024, compared to the baseline year of 2018.


The U.S. headquarters via Mechanism of the Give2Asia Platform, connecting with DOMI Earth, accompanied the Taiwan company to carry out a series of sustainable events. During the Volunteer Day, they planted trees for the earth and planted a commitment to protect the environment together near Gaomei Wetland in Taichung!


The month-long Xinsi tree planting event is divided into a sustainable trilogy


Sustainability Action Step 1: Sustainability Leadership Workshop


The purpose of sustainable action is to awaken sustainable thinking, and the action itself can enable enterprises to start and continue to have an impact on the environment. The key to achieving "sustainability" lies in the participation of employees. DOMI held a sustainable leadership workshop on April 9, 2021, at the office of Synopsys Zhuke Park, with about 100 participants online and offline. Through the 1.5-hour "Sustainable Leadership Workshop", DOMI lead Synopsys colleagues to understand the urgency of the current climate crisis. Today, two-thirds of extreme weather events are caused by human activities. Although time is becoming more and more urgent, in our daily life, we can actually improve many things for the environment, such as personal use less plastic bags, carrying environmental protection Cups and so on, a little more advanced, to companies directing their operations towards zero waste or carbon neutrality, the actions everyone takes, no matter the size, will have an impact on the climate emergency we are in.


How to drive employees in various departments to start to think: Why is sustainable action needed? Why is the company doing this? What is the relevance of sustainable action to my department and work? In our past workshops, we found that many employees are still quite unfamiliar with concepts such as climate change, environment, and carbon reduction. They couldn’t understand why they should be exposed to these sustainable concepts, nor can they connect with their own work and life. Therefore, the "Sustainable Leadership Workshop" starts with "Why should we care?", brings the concept of environment and sustainability to employees, and guides Synopsys employees to think step by step: After having motivation, what should they do in their department? How to implement it in daily life? Even how to use one's position to exert influence, adjust the rules and procedures of work, deepen the concept of sustainable action into work, and communicate it to stakeholders. After the workshop, Synopsys colleagues wrote on their small cards the green actions they will carry out for the earth and launched their 21-day sustainable green action.




Sustainability Action Step 2: 21-Day Sustainable Green Action - A New Atmosphere of Sustainable Action for Enterprises


After the "Sustainable Leadership Workshop", employees already have the concept of environmental sustainability and have ideas about how to act. The current atmosphere of everyone's discussion in the workshop is enthusiastic and eager to try, but it is easy to lose motivation after returning to work. The "21-Day Sustainable Green Action" is the second phase of sustainable action, hoping to continue the enthusiasm and commitment of the employees in the workshop and transform them into practical actions. 21 days is the time to develop a habit. During these 21 days, DOMI will accompany the employees of the company to practice one green action a day in their daily lives, from simply turning off the lights and using environmentally friendly tableware, to some people starting to renovate their offices and home environment, using energy-saving appliances and devices. Seemingly simple and small actions, employees have the opportunity to connect the learned sustainable concepts with their lives and develop the habit of "green thinking". Employees use eco-friendly cups at any time and choose energy-saving products, which will also bring the concept and habit of sustainability to their o their families, friends, business partners, and clients, creating a culture and image of corporate environmental friendliness.


The "21-Day Sustainable Green Action" also allows colleagues who usually work together to have a common goal, increases employee cohesion, and forms a "green atmosphere" in the office. Colleagues shared their green actions in the workshop group and urged each other. DOMI also gave encouragement and suggestions to the group. This kind of green action atmosphere strengthened the continuous motivation for green actions and inspired more permanent actions.


Sustainability Action Step 3: Tree Parties - A Sustainable Commitment Planted on Your Own


The final step of the trilogy of sustainable actions lies in the diffusion and commitment of sustainable values. On the eve of Earth Day on April 17, 2021, DOMI Earth led nearly 160 Synopsys employees and their families to plant more than 200 trees near Gaomei Wetland in Taichung. At the beginning of the activity, DOMI Earth introduced the concepts of climate change, energy saving and carbon reduction, and environmental sustainability through games, stories, and singing. These engaging activities allowed participants to have fun while becoming interested in environmental issues and more willing to recognize and practice green actions.


Then, through the explanation of the environmental restoration staff, we learned about the local ecology and the environment of the tree planting on that day, and let everyone understand the characteristics of the saplings to be restored that day through a quiz game. Finally, Synopsys colleagues and their families personally planted the seedlings, experiencing the process of tree planting firsthand. Realizing that the carbon emissions absorbed by planting trees are minuscule compared with the usual energy consumption in daily life, now they gained a better understanding of the significance of energy saving and carbon reduction in daily life, and strive to practice green actions.

Sustainability Leadership Works to Create Sustainability Awareness

Before the tree planting activity, through the sustainable leadership workshop, we led the employees of Synopsys to understand the urgency of the climate crisis and let the employees of Synopsys aware of the repercussions of environmental destruction that are gradually affecting our living environment, and igniting their sense of emergency. Inspiring their awareness of their decision to make a change for the environment through the speeches in the workshop is one of our great achievements.


21-Day Sustainable Green Action to Form Sustainable Habits

DOMI Earth led Synopsys employees to respond to the 21-day green action, hoping that through 21 days of perseverance, they would develop sustainable habits. The employees of Synopsys were very enthusiastic. Not only did they carry out their green actions every day, but they also shared their green actions with breakfast shop owners and taught them how to use reusable food bags. They started to set up a single-sided waste paper recycling area in their working environment and set up a rubber band recycling place in their home so that paper and rubber bands could be reused to the fullest. In addition, Synopsys employees who participated in the 21-Day Sustainable Green Action also began to correct their electricity consumption habits, refused to use disposable tableware, and started carrying their own eco-friendly tableware and cups. After 21 days, the vast majority of Synopsys employees who participated in the 21-day green action promised to continue to implement their personal green actions, and for some participants, the green actions they performed had become their habit. Getting everyone to act for the environment is also one of our achievements.



Tree Planting Events Planted a Sustainable Commitment

On the day of tree planting, both adults and children experienced the survival crisis of polar bears through games and then reflected on whether their living habits caused damage to the environment. After realizing that they may be the perpetrator that makes it difficult for polar bears to survive, they understood better why they were planting trees that day! In the face of serious environmental issues, it is our achievement to lead adults and children to devote themselves seriously!




Why is a tree-planting event important? What is the impact?


Through this cooperation project, we have ignited the awareness of corporate partners on environmental protection and led them to start to take action. Through the 21-day sustainable green action, individuals' green actions are brought into their families, turning personal green actions into family green actions. Because they carry eco-friendly bags, cups, and tableware with them, their green actions also penetrate the businesses they frequently visit, and through these businesses, the concept of environmental protection is passed on to other customers. The influence of its sustainable action has changed from individuals to families and then expanded to the circle of life, and its appeal has grown exponentially. One person's actions may not change the environment, but when a group of people are changing for something, it will become a trend.

According to the research data of the Forest Service, on average, every additional tree on the earth can absorb and reduce 12 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions in a year. In this event, Synopsys planted 200 seedlings, which are expected to reduce about 2,400 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually once they grow into trees. Moreover, this tree-planting event allowed Synopsys colleagues to bring their families and children into nature, using this opportunity to educate them about the importance of sustainable environmental management

Synopsys Colleagues Feedback After Sustainable Green Action


Sunny Chen:

21-day sustainable green action, no, acts of kindness towards the Earth do not stop at 21 days. Under the promotion of this green action, I began to record one by one the small things that can be called green actions every day, such as environmentally friendly tableware, lunch boxes, turning off the engine, bringing your own shopping bags, environmental supplementary bags, etc... My colleagues bringing their own tableware has become a standard, and my family is also used to not buying plastic bags when they go out to buy things. Even the breakfast shop owner will take the initiative to get containers from me. However, this is a gradual process of subtle influence. When green actions fill your surroundings, you also become a part of it.

Through this 21-day green campaign, I have developed a lot of environmental protection habits. The environmental protection behavior that was just a thought has now become a part of my life. Now, if I go out without bringing eco-friendly tableware and straws, I feel like I'm creating unnecessary waste. Moreover, if I see friends or colleagues using straws or not bringing their own tableware, I can't help but care about them and hope they can also do their part for the Earth. Recently, there has been a shortage of water and electricity. By pushing myself through this continuous plan, I've also developed the habit of saving water and electricity. I try not to use air conditioning as much as possible and not waste water resources. In the end, I think doing this kind of action alone might feel boring, but when many people do it together, it becomes more motivating. I think it's a good activity and hope it will influence more people in the future.

Future Prospects and Plans After Tree Planting Events


Although the tree planting event has ended, we have assisted Synopsys in planning the follow-up care of the saplings, so that everyone can continue to pay attention and ensure that the saplings grow without worry. Young saplings must be irrigated every 2 weeks and weeded every 3 months to ensure their healthy growth.


The awareness of environmental protection is gradually rising, and tree-planting activities are gradually becoming popular among enterprises. But people often overlook that the saplings need to be taken care of after they are planted. Regular watering and weeding are required to ensure that they will grow into trees. Therefore, when planning tree planting projects in the future, follow-up maintenance must also be included as one of the activities, rather than starting discussions and planning after the trees are already planted.
